Short-term health insurance policies give coverage for a short period of time. This is perceived to be the answer to the prayer of those who are in between jobs or those waiting for other health insurance to start the period of its coverage. Generally, the coverage of short term health insurance averages from six to twelve months. Should you need coverage for an extended time, a standard long term health insurance will be better. It is easier to apply for this type of insurance plan, and it is created to guard against unexpected illnesses or accidents instead of giving comprehensive coverage that is why, it does not include pysical examinations, vaccinations and preventive health (dental or vision) care. However, buying this kind of plan will not qualify you for individual health plans, also known as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Plans. HIPAA plans are expensive in general because they cover pre existing conditions, while short term health insurance plans do not.
